The Green Project – My new Starbucks tumbler
Written by praveen on December 29, 2008 – 11:47 pmIn my quest towards going green for the next year, I have decided that I shall be carrying my own coffee mug to all coffee stores from now on. Most coffee stores serve coffee in either plastic/styrofoam cups or partially recycled paper cups which you know eventually end up in a landfill. In fact, even popular stores like Starbucks use cups that are made out of only 10% recycled material. And we don’t even know what happens to the cup once it gets dumped in their trash cans. Does it get recycled? Or does it just get dumped? Well why bother to think about all that when you can bring in your own coffee mug? Not only would it make you green, it might just let a few people around you know that bringing in your own mug is totally cool at a coffee store! I have also heard that you usually get a discount too if you bring in your own mug.
Last night, I was at Starbucks and stumbled upon this really cool tumbler. It is made out of more than 28% post-consumer recycled content and guess how much was it selling for? $9.95. Yep. And here comes the even more fun part. With this tumbler, Starbucks is giving away a drink of your choice for free! Yes, anything on the menu. Needless to say, Khushi ordered her favorite White Chocolate Mocha. So, essentially, the tumbler cost me about 6 bucks. Pretty sweet deal huh? I did try looking on Starbucks’ online store, but could not find this tumbler. But I think you should be able to get one at your neighborhood SB.

I have recently purchased one of these tumblers as well, but was wondering afterward whether or not it contains anything like Bisphenol A. I would hope that they would have looked into this, as it is meant for hot liquids, but I’m still curious if you knew of any way to find this out?

Hi Becca,
I had asked the same question at the store that I bought this tumbler at. Unfortunately, they had no information available for me. I did some research on Starbucks’ website but did not find this particular tumbler though. However, similar tumblers don’t have any mention of BPA content in them or the lack thereof. They do have some tumblers that specifically say ‘BPA-free’. So, I’m thinking this might have small traces of it. The only reason I bought this tumbler was that it was cheap and was made out of recycled material. Also, the fact that I had to bring home a Starbucks cup every time I drank coffee just didn’t appeal to me. I shall keep you posted once I have more info available.

I feel like if it were BPA free, they would advertise the heck out of that…I can’t find out the content of the plastic either, I’ve looked all over their website, but nothing…I’m pretty confident there is BPA in the plastic, I’m telling my mom to stop using the tumbler.

The recycle code on the bottom is for PVC (#7) which is basically BPoA.
Stainless Steal is the only safe way to go for a hot beverage.

Hi Kori,
I apologize for not approving your comment for so long. I have barely been able to log into the site and check on the comments.
That is some valuable info that you have there. I should have done my research and posted on the site. I have dumped my tumbler and switched to stainless steel. Will write my review shortly.

Just following up on this post.
I have dumped my Starbucks tumbler after realizing that it does have BPA traces in it and switched to a Stainless Steel one. Check out the review here
